i'm sure you've noticed i haven't been posting as of late. or maybe you haven't. maybe i'm speaking to the five people that read this (hello!)?

anyway, confession time. i'm a bit bored with this blog and am trying to find ways to keep myself creative and inspired so i can make this blog better than what i feel it is. which is simply, a forum for me to talk shit and in the process, keep you, my wonderful five readers, entertained :)

first, i've started fresh air frolics on tumblr. why? well, there's so many images, gifs and shit that i come across online that for some reason don't translate here but do just fine on tumblr.

bear in mind, the shit is not for children, prudes or the faint of heart so if you have more of a pg-13 aesthetic, don't visit.

and while i'll continue to write here, it'll be sporadically. i'd like to aim for twice a week, we'll see what i can muster between the two. on to the title of this post...

i'm not a big fan of kissing and telling (unless it's with my trusted personal friends) but i've decided to write about some of my dating experiences because mentally, i've got a big WTF going on in me noggin'.

i'll start by saying that i detest dating. i'm really not built for it. i'm very private, i don't like having to connect with new people (aka kiss a bunch of frogs) over and over again and there are very few that i truly make a connection with anyway.

of course, no names will be divulged to protect the guilty but some shit that happens is too good to pass up sharing.

would be suitor #1: met him dancing, cute, tall, a dj. harmless enough. why he's fired? he text messages EVERYTHING, including asking me out. that does nothing for a lady boner. maybe for some but not this girl, i'm not a teenager, i like when men pick up the fucking phone and "state their business." i haven't even told him he's fired. if i have to have that conversation with a grown man, he's not the one for me. so i figure i'll let him burn his fingerpads off instead.

would be suitor #2: paul bunyon type, met him at a industry party, super attentive, nice to my friend, a gentleman in every way. issue, he lives out of town but no biggie as i wasn't looking to marry him, just someone to know and occasionally date, or so i thought.

we've known one another since the beginning of the year, he mainly communicates via IM, every few weeks. the window that was open and slightly curious about him closed the fuck down via his communication method. sorry but my lady boner doesn't stay interested if there's nothing to keep my interests. also, starting a text or IM off with "hey sexy" also doesn't work.

recently, dude tells me he's coming to town early. he then suggests that i take a day off, get the devil's lettuce and "hang out." what, bitch? you want ME to take one of my precious vacation days for a man i barely know, whom i barely communicate with, then traipse around the city scoring treats?

i had to explain i wasn't using a vacation day unless i was actually going on vacation. when he asked if i wanted to hang out that evening, i mentioned i had dinner plans (true story and a future installment of this singledom shit). he seemed taken aback, that i might actually have plans. i'm still taken aback that a man thinks an occasional IM saying, "hey sexy" would keep a woman interested.

a little about me, i'm a walking contradiction. i can be very "traditional" in some respects and more liberated in others, depends on the situation. so be it. but i like being courted, i prefer it. i like when men are gentleman and they assume nothing.

i'm not unattractive, i'm pretty smart and well-rounded. i'm also selective when it comes to my future as i've seen enough talk shows to know what will keep me from being miserable in this life so i can avoid making that last trrek to the golden gate bridge.

but for the life of me, this dating shit...in the words of florida evans, "damn, damn, damn!"

if this were a video poking fun at the jewish culture, would it be antisemitic or would it be, "oh, someone really pegged a part of our culture?"

and therein lies the rub. because yes, i think this is funny but maybe it's because i'm looking at this person as an individual with a thick accent as opposed to an individual that represents my friends, their families and asians at large. but i'm critically thinking after all, can't say the same for a lot of people on this planet.

we can all laugh at ourselves, we can always laugh at others. some people have a huge problem with other's "sensitivities", being "pc", etc but i like to err on the side of caution, simply out of respect. and also because i hate the way certain shit feels my damn self.

i've been on a hip hop may actually be dead kick as of late after being sent one "kreayshawn - gucci gucci" video.

does she have swag? sure. catchy hook? yep. does she represent "the town" (no, not the film...if you're familiar with the bay you know i'm referring to oakland)? all day, erryday (lol). do i hate her? absolutely not and obviously no one else does as her views on youtube steadily grow along with her followers on twitter.

she's mentioned on the fader, world star hip hop got wind of her, the baltimore sun did a blurb, she's down with odd future which gives her an immediate in and upon perusing her site, she's a pretty good photographer. so why am i mad?

what i find annoying is that any motherfucker these days can consider themselves a "rapper," i'm simply not from that school. i love hip hop as an art form, not just as a club anthem or something one feels they do because they have a sense of rhythm.

i don't appreciate the fucker on that wretched t-mobile commercial (how come apple hasn't sued over their recent campaign?) and i don't appreciate any tom, dick & harry picking up a mic and declaring themselves an mc. or maybe that's just it, i'm beefin' about rappers vs mc's.

i appreciate eminem, the beastie boys, 3rd bass, i'm not mad at mac miller, i fux with action bronson, evidence (love him), everlast, aesop rock, el-p, yelawolf (still on the fence), sage francis (he's interesting enough), bubba sparxx (what happened to him?!), pref1x (we'll see), atmosphere (i get why people dig him)....or even jackie chain (for shits n giggles, people. shits n giggles). you see where i'm going with this? while flow is everything, so is being authentic.

understand, there are just as many wack rappers of color (i'm looking at you lil b) as there are white rappers. there's just as many wack singers as there are rappers. i definitely get that. but what i'm truly annoyed by is who gets the opportunity to infiltrate mainstream culture and feed their families with no skill to rest their laurels on but some other cats, with an actual skill set will never see the light of day.

brilliant use of a thom yorke sample produced by lupe fiasco (he really is gifted and doesn't get nearly enough credit in this current industry), dope and inventive video directed by "downtown's sweetheart" va$htie kola, i could go on and on.

recently had a discussion with a non-black friend about the use of the "nword" by non-black people in the company of black people. it was an interesting, albeit very respectful discussion (wish i could say the same about our country and its political parties but i digress).

personally, i don't care for it but then i don't care for black people that i don't know freely saying it to me either.

that said, what i do find interesting about the ubiquitous "nword" is that there are so many words that exist, that various cultures use amongst themselves, yet no one is clamoring to use those particular terms. nope, it's mainly the nword that makes certain people salivate with glee, they get a slight glimmer in their eye...

i have friends from other cultures and i've heard them say a thing or two in front of me which honestly makes me feel like i've earned my stripes into the secret world of said culture. but trust me when i say, i would NEVER use the terms they use. i don't care how comfortable we are, it's not for me. i just delight and snicker in how they use their terms and the context in which it's said.

now out of respect, i'm not going to lay out other people's cultural treats here but i'm sure if you do a little digging, you can find and discuss amongst your peers.

but on some real shit, why do you think the nword is the word of choice? i'm quite curious.

is it the history between black and white america? the mainstreaming of hip hop/rap? is it because people instantly want to say what they're told they can't? white privilege? different generations and their comfort level?

apologies for the delay in posts but i work in music and it's been an insane week around these parts.

the grammys are like the superbowl of the music industry and "grammy week" is often incredibly busy. people come out in droves, the workplace is non-stop action and by the time sunday evening rolls around, you're spent. or at least, i am.

speaking of the grammys, i got a couple of texts this morning from bewildered friends asking why eminem didn't win more awards or why esperanza spalding did. actually, one text basically said, "who the fuck is esperanza spalding?"

really? you're asking why an artist you don't know (presumably because you listen to top 40) won best new artist even though they've been handing out awards to beiber like hot cakes for the last year? could it be that maybe nara s and the voting members of the music industry like her music and think she's deserving? i didn't know that beiber was supposed to win. and yes, i said beiber because no one is bringing up the fact that florence & the machines, mumford & sons, drake or any other artist in that category lost to her as well.

i'm known for messing with kids and i make no apologies for it. trying to scare the crap out of them come halloween is what i live for.

it's a win-win situation: i get my jollies and for a lifetime, the scared kid gets to talk about that one halloween when the ninja with the (fake) chainsaw stepped out of the dark and terrorized him and his kid sister while a ghoul with a black cape and scary mask hit them from the other dark corner forcing them to split up and run in place (a la scooby doo) while they figured out their best escape route. and yes, this is a true story, one of my crowning achievements in life.

(a close runner-up, the time i terrorized my siblings by turning off all the house lights and blaring the twilight zone theme from the living room. ah, the memories.)

so understand, if i ever had a kid, i'd do this...in a heartbeat. and i'd make my husband his favorite dessert if he did this as a reward for being awesome!

for those that read more often than not, i'm sure you can tell by now i have a deep affinity for music (thanks to my parents) and i've worked around it for several years, plus i have my own set of technics.

i've had some interesting conversations in my day but a few convos that seem to consistently happen are because i've been born with a certain melanin count, it then becomes my job to educate certain people about me.

case in point...

let's start with my name.
when people meet me, they've often assumed i'm asian, are taken aback, then respond with such pleasantries like, "oh, you're not asian?!"

really, captain obvious?

to be fair, i usually give them a pass, even though my name is also west african but i see why they've thought that and smile graciously while explaining it's dual origin. but typically, this is where the conversation runs amok:

exhibit a:
they often express a certain level of disappointment after they find out i'm not asian and then i'm asked "how'd you get that name?"

to which i want to reply, "i was found in a manger, the local town adopted me, this is the name they bequeathed me."

but i usually answer with, oh...my mother. extra, extra added emphasis on mother.

but what i find especially interesting is when an asian person asks me, "why'd they name you that?"
me: you're asking me my name when you introduce yourself as rebecca? really?
(usually i get stank eye after that remark but they know i'm right and dead the conversation.)

exhibit b:
another question when someone meets me...

question: you don't sound (insert race).
answer: hmm, you didn't sound like a racist until you opened your mouth but...

exhibit c:
question: how did you get your hair to do that?
answer: do what? (foot shifting ensues as they tap dance around the question)
question: oh, i mean...you know, look like that?
answer (given with a knowing smile): you mean, dark? oh, i dye it. i started graying early.
statement (often blurted out in frustration): i mean it doesn't look like (insert offense).
answer: ohhhhhhhh. i'm sure you being critically thinking and all know we come in different skin tones, sizes and hair textures...you know, like other humans?

usually there's an awkward pause as said person tries to change the subject or reformat the offense by making it your responsibility to make them feel better about their cultural faux pas. they may even say, "oh, don't get angry"...start snapping their fingers, swiveling their necks all while saying girlfriend in jest, even though you've been calm and staring quizzically at them the entire time.

exhibit d:
statement: your hair doesn't match your skin complexion.
*blank stare*

and of course, these conversations don't extend to me only:

i have friends that it's assumed they're trustafarians because of the color of their skin

friends that it's assumed they're demure and subservient (one of said friends is from oakland. for your own safety, please never say that to her, lol)

friends that bear the brunt of both cultures for being mixed race...it goes on and on.

sad to hear that teena marie has passed away.

teena was a singer/songwriter AND producer who may have been known as rick james' protégé but her talent stood on its own. she also is responsible for the law that makes it illegal for a label to keep an artist under contract while refusing to release their work. lady t, indeed.

while people may adore other singers known for their brand of "blue-eyed soul", teena marie was the only white artist black america considered one of their own. especially because her mainstream hits were only a smidgen of her actual career.

in my humble (who am i kidding) opinion, no other white artist has been able to pull of soul music as authentically as teena marie. no one. yes, bobby caldwell's hit "what you won't do for love" may have caused a double take but let's be honest, he's no teena marie.

sure there's michael mcdonald, ambrosia, george michael, hall & oates all of whom are dope but we all know who they were, and so does mainstream america. and yeah, you can throw in justin timberlake and robin thicke as singers with soulful tinges but honestly, they still don't have shit on teena marie. she held her own against some of the biggest names in r&b and had their respect and love as well.

i'm sure it's obvious i am a big fan of hers. i loved so much of her catalogue, respected her work but i have to say one my favorite ballads of hers is portuguese love...classic r&b.

ms. marie reminds me of family get togethers, summer bbq's, crushes and my friend robin. robin loved her music. here's hoping if the afterlife is true, she's singing robin a lullaby.

here's i need your lovin' one of her biggest hits that she wrote and produced, from the album irons in the fire. i think need to go roller skate her honor.
